Long before anyone carved a pumpkin, Scotland was hollowing out neeps, and Halloween was the night the veil between this world and the next wore thin. The George has more reason than most to take it seriously. In 1776 the Duke of Argyll had the ground floors turned into churches, one for the Gaelic congregation and one for the English, and the public bar now stands where they once worshipped. The jail is next door.
For as long as guests have been writing about The George, a few have mentioned a ghost, a friendly one by most accounts.
On Saturday 31 October the cocktail bar gives itself over to all of it. The lights go low, the decorations go up, and for one night nobody sweeps away the cobwebs.
Music from Starsky starts at 21:30, and entry is free. In the old Scottish tradition of guising, you had to earn your treat with a song, a joke or a poem. We won’t ask for a performance, but fancy dress is very much encouraged.
If you’d like dinner first, it’s worth booking a table.
